So for a while I've been hearing about this group that's supposed to be "the next big thing" coming out of Canada. So, after prolonging it as long as I could, I finally decided to check out Braids to see if they live up to the hype. The first track, Lemonade, struck me with its atmosphere, math-rock guitar lines and soaring female vocals. Contrasted with lines such as "Have you fucked all the stray kids yet?", this band surprises your expectations. Bright, technical pop brought down by a ironic, jaded perception of relationships. It's as if the band looks at relationships between people and comes away unaffected, but for a lingering sense of nostalgia. It's definitely worth looking further into, and with such a young band, that is an extremely positive indication.
